Culture and history

Things to do - Chitral

Chitral's cultural heritage is deeply rooted in its diverse traditions. The region’s heritage encompasses a variety of crafts, music, dances, local games, and distinct customs. The Kalash people, an indigenous tribe in the district, speak Kalasha, a language unique to them. While most residents speak Urdu and Pashto, Kalasha remains the primary language in Kalash Valley. The majority of Chitral's population follows Sunni Islam, though the area also has a significant Shia Muslim presence. The Kalash tribe, however, is known for its ancient beliefs and polytheistic practices, honoring multiple gods and adhering to age-old traditions.

Chitral is also home to several unique festivals that are relatively unknown outside of the region. One of the most significant is Jashn-e-Nowroz, celebrated annually on March 21st, marking the arrival of the Persian New Year. The Shandoor Polo Festival, held at the highest polo ground in the world, is another highlight, attracting visitors from across the globe. Additionally, the spring harvest brings the Chilmijhust (or Joshi) festival, a joyful celebration lasting up to six days, followed by the Uchal festival in August. December brings the Chitirmus festival, a time for the community to pray for prosperity in the coming year. Music plays an essential role in Chitral’s culture, with instruments like the sitar, drums, dol, and damama often featured in both weddings and festivals. Men participate in traditional circle dances, adding to the festive atmosphere. Chitral’s rich culinary traditions also add to its cultural allure, with dishes like Pandir Muzhi, pushor tiki, Zholai, kali, lazhek, and Kawirogh offering a taste of the region’s unique flavors.
