Mardan is a city in the Mardan District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, Pakistan. Located in the Valley of Peshawar, Mardan is the second-largest city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (after Peshawar). It is a fast-growing city that experienced a population boom in the latter half of the twentieth century.

The district is named after Mardan, which also serves as the district's headquarters. The area is known for its agriculture business, “Peerah “the famous sooghaat of Mardan, as well as the historical buildings of Jamal Garhi, Takht Bhai, and Sawal Dher. Mardan is also well-known for its economics and entrepreneurial spirit. The recently completed China-Pakistan Economic Corridor adds to the significance of this century. Rashakai, on the Mardan border, is one of the primary economic zones of this project, which helps to enhance Mardan economy.

Culture and Heritage

The region is dominated by traditional Pashtun culture, which is largely focused on Islam and the Pashtun people's traditional lifestyle, known as Pashtunwali. The area has a long and illustrious history in terms of culture and heritage. The town's multicultural variety is exemplified by the presence of Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, and Christians population. Jamal Ghari, Takht Bahi, and Shahbaz Garha are three renowned archaeological sites in the area. Natives are friendly, honest, and courageous. However, Urdu (national language), Pashto (mother tongue), Punjabi, Saraiki, and English are all spoken and understood by the locals.

Men's clothing often consists of shalwar-kameez, topi (cap), pakul (Pashtun hat), karkul (like Jinnah cap), and white kufis (circular cap). Traditional long gowns, chaddars, or dupattas are worn by women to cover their heads and hair. Pashtoon outfits and handcrafted jewelry are very popular among women. Their traditional dances include Khattak, Attan, Mahsud, and Waziri. The most popular dishes are kabala palao, chapli kabab, tikka, kawa, serge, unique long naans, and sugi ka halwa. Until 2009, there was no private or public sector university in Mardan. Abdul Wali Khan University is the first public sector university that was constructed in 2009. However, the district's economy is based on both agriculture and industry. The region has a lot of potential in terms of exploiting natural resources and making the most use of the mining sector. Tourism is another sector that contributes a considerable amount to the country's economic growth and GDP. The town's education and literacy levels are gradually improving. Literacy is now around 48%. New educational establishments are being established in both the commercial and governmental sectors.
