Shangrila was established in 1983 with the opening of the first Resort Hotel in Skardu, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Shangrila Resort Hotel was founded by the late Muhammad Aslam Khan Afridi, the first commander of the Northern Scouts of the Pakistan Army. The resort is known for its restaurant that is built on the fuselage of an aircraft that had crashed nearby. Shangrila was named after a book titled Lost Horizon by James Hilton. In the novel, the author narrates a tale in which an airplane crash landed near a riverbed, in the early 1920s. The surviving passengers came across some Buddhist monks from a nearby temple and sought their help. They were taken to a beautiful lamasery filled with a variety of fruits and flowers.

Baltistan's capital is Skardu. It is home to a diverse group of individuals from many cultures. It is culturally rich, as seen by the numerous historic sites and fort ruins in the area. These areas have been highly inspired by the Buddha, as seen by the numerous Buddha remnants and inscriptions. Baltistan is populated by people of many cultures, hence there are a variety of dialects spoken here. In the main towns where schools and offices are situated, Urdu is widely understood, and English is spoken and understood. Balti, a sub-dialect of the Ladakhi language, is the most widely spoken.

Baltis are recognized for their friendliness and love of harmony. Their faces are constantly adorned with loving smiles. These people are quite welcoming. They won't let you go until you've had a nice meal at one of their homes. They've also shown that they're quite generous with presents. A simple shalwar kameez and waistcoat are worn by males, while a loose woolen salwar kameez is worn by women in traditional Balti attire. Traditional hats of the same size are worn by both men and women. Male hats are hairy and simple, but feminine hats are generally black with embroidered edges. The majority of the population is Muslim. However, other religions also exist, but they are not permanent inhabitants. The vast majority of the population are Ithna-Ashri Shia Muslims, with a large minority of Sunni Muslims being there. Ismailis and Nurbaksh are two other religious groups in Skardu.
