Culture and history

Things to do - Peshawar

During British rule, Peshawar became a hub for both Hindko and Pashtun intellectuals. For the majority of Peshawar's tenure under British administration, Hindko speakers, also known as Khaarian ("city dwellers" in Pashto), were in charge of the majority culture. Peshawar's people are recognized for being extremely welcoming and for making others feel at ease, which makes you want to come again and again. People in Peshawar are conservative in terms of dress and socializing, and that is why we see a lot of shuttlecock burqas, abayas, and chaddars around town. However, with the addition of more places and restaurants where teens can hang out, the fashions are slowly changing.

Another old tradition that has altered is the hujra, which used to be a distinct location where men would assemble, similar to a drawing-room for males, with lots of cushions on the floor. However, this was more typical in the past when people's living areas were much larger and when the girls of the home would not walk in front of the male visitors. Nowadays, it is more or less like the rest of the cities, with every house having a drawing-room rather than a separate large room for visitors. You may also know that the Pathans of Peshawar celebrate Eid one day earlier than the rest of Pakistan's cities. Not everyone follows the government, but some do, resulting in a lack of unity as some people do and others do not. As a result, even within the city, people are separated into two groups. Everyone has a distinct perspective about Peshawar's inhabitants. However, you might be shocked to know that they are not only intelligent and well-educated, but also quite knowledgeable about current fashion trends. When it comes to girls, they are likewise outgoing and non-conservative.
