Culture and history
The Karlal and a small group of Dhunds (known as 'Dhund-Abbasis') are the two main tribes residing in Nathia Gali. The locals predominantly speak Hindko, a language shared with people from other regions of the Galyat area. These tribes have historically maintained simple, primitive lifestyles, with most of them living in close-knit communities until the 1960s. The Karlal tribe and the Dhund-Abbasis are integral to the cultural fabric of Nathia Gali, contributing to the unique local heritage and traditions of the region.
Due to a shortage of employment and educational opportunities, many locals from Nathia Gali were historically compelled to migrate to the plains and larger cities such as Peshawar, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and even Karachi for jobs and education. However, with the growth of the Abbottabad region's economy, a significant number of these tribes have now found work in the tourist industry or other sectors and industries. The Galiyat Development Authority (GDA) monitors the development and economic progress of this region.
A traditional Nathia Gali cuisine specialty is Biryani, a flavorful dish made with either chicken or mutton. The Biryani is prepared using basmati rice, served in a traditional style, accompanied by a refreshing yogurt made from locally sourced milk.
