Culture and history
The Lahori People's culture is a reflection of their way of life, literature, language, cuisine, festivals, music, politics, and socio-economic conditions of its people. It is distinguished by the merging of influence from South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, and the West. The culture of Lahore is unique. When you go through the small twisting streets of Lahore, you can see the genuine "Lahori" way of life.
Early in the morning, the traditional breakfast of "Halwa and Poori" may be seen being prepared on the street corner. The paper-thin "Poori" prepared with flour and cooked in boiling hot oil goes perfectly with "Bhaji," a meal of potatoes and grams with onion and pickles "Halwa," a dessert made of sooji, ghee, and sugar. Lahoris never forget to take a glass of "Lassi" prepared from yogurt, water, and sugar in one go after this somewhat hefty feast.
Life within Lahore's Walled City is vibrant and exciting. During the spring season, the festival of Basant or kite flying attracts the poor and rich from all parts of Lahore to the Walled City. The life inside the red-light zone or the Heera Mandi, which is part of the Walled City of Lahore, is distinct from that of the rest of the Walled City.
The dancing females may be seen standing in the jharokhas of the brothels, and music can be heard, especially late at night. The National Horse and Cattle Show, Mausoleum of Ali Hujwiri, Festival of Lamps, Mela Chiraghan, and Basant, are some of the important and popular events in Lahore.
