The scenic beauty of Murree is poised for a remarkable transformation as the Punjab government unveils plans for the Pindi-Murree Glass Train Project, also known as the Murree Rail Link. This innovative initiative aims to enhance tourism and connectivity while integrating modern transportation with breathtaking natural vistas.
A Vision for Development
1- Vision
The Murree Rail Link is a key component of a broader effort to develop the region and improve its accessibility. The project is being spearheaded by the Punjab government, with 18 different departments working collaboratively on the Project Concept One (PC-1). Led by the Punjab Transport Minister, this team includes prominent officials such as the Rawalpindi commissioner, the deputy commissioners of Rawalpindi and Murree, and other experts from relevant fields.
Project Details
1- Details
The Route and Infrastructure The glass train will cover a 65-kilometer track starting from Rawalpindi Railway Station and passing through the scenic Margalla Hills and Barakahu before reaching Murree Bhurban. The route is designed to offer travelers stunning views of the region’s natural beauty, making the journey as memorable as the destination. Feasibility Study The National Engineering and Scientific Commission (NESCOM) is conducting a feasibility study to determine the project’s viability. Approved in June 2024 by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the study will assess technical requirements, project costs, and timeline estimates. Drone footage of the proposed route has already been collected to aid in planning. Strategic Significance While the primary focus of the project is to boost tourism, experts highlight its broader strategic importance. According to Ashfaq Khattak, former Pakistan Railways general manager and current CEO of the Centre of Excellence in Transportation and Railway Engineering, the project could play a key role in enhancing regional connectivity.
Future Expansion
1- Future
There is speculation that the project might be extended to Muzaffarabad, further strengthening its regional impact. The concept also draws comparisons to India’s high-speed tourist train connecting Jammu, Srinagar, and Baramulla.
Phases of Development
1- Phases
Phase 1 The first phase involves constructing a 55-kilometer railway track from Islamabad’s Margalla Railway Station to Bhara Kahu, Phurwaha Mor, Ghora Gali, Jhika Gali, and Bhurban. Phase 2 Interestingly, a feasibility study for the second phase was completed during Nawaz Sharif's tenure as part of the Kashmir Railway initiative. This phase aligns with earlier planning efforts to enhance regional rail connectivity.
Advanced Features and Safety
1- Features
The train will feature cutting-edge safety systems, including a broad or standard gauge and a cog-and-pinion mechanism. This design allows the train to safely navigate steep elevations, climbing one foot for every 12 feet of track. Even during snowfall, the train will remain operational, ensuring reliable service throughout the year.
Implementation Model
1- Model
The project will be implemented through a public-private partnership (PPP). Once the feasibility study is completed and approved by relevant authorities, the project will move to the international tendering stage, inviting global expertise and investment.
Tourism and Beyond
1- Tourism
The Pindi-Murree Glass Train Project is expected to significantly enhance the region’s appeal as a tourist destination. By providing a unique travel experience and improving connectivity, the project is poised to boost the local economy and create new opportunities for businesses and communities.
Pakistan’s Response to Regional Competition
1- Response
The initiative is also seen as Pakistan’s response to India’s operational Jammu-Srinagar-Baramulla railway link, emphasizing the country’s commitment to modernizing its transportation infrastructure and promoting tourism.
Key Notes
The Pindi-Murree Glass Train Project is more than just a tourism initiative, it is a visionary step toward sustainable development and enhanced regional connectivity. By blending modern engineering with natural beauty, this ambitious project promises to redefine travel experiences in Pakistan. What are your thoughts on this groundbreaking project?
