Culture and history

Things to do - NAGAR

Nagar Valley is home to a diverse linguistic and cultural community. Burushaski and Shina are the main languages spoken in the area, with Burushaski being spoken by 60% of the population. This unique language is primarily found in the Hunza and Nagar valleys. Shina, the second most common language, is widely spoken throughout the region, while Pashto has gained prominence due to the settlement of Pashtun people from surrounding areas like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In addition to the local languages, Urdu and English are also understood, particularly in more urbanised areas and among younger generations. Religiously, the region is largely Sunni Muslim, with Islam playing an important role in the culture and daily life of the people. The combination of languages and cultural influences makes Nagar Valley a vibrant and unique area in Gilgit-Baltistan, where different communities live in harmony, preserving their traditions while embracing modern changes.

In Nagar Valley, traditional attire plays an important role in cultural expression, with distinct clothing and accessories symbolising both honour and identity. Men typically wear shalwar kameez, a woollen cap, and a woollen robe, which can be long or short-sleeved depending on the weather. The woollen cap is considered a significant part of their attire, symbolising respect and tradition. Women in Nagar also wear a shalwar kameez, or bright frock, and adorn themselves with the beautiful Iraghi cap, which is an iconic piece of jewellery in the region. The Iraghi cap is often embroidered, and its accompanying jewellery, known as silsila, is popular, particularly during significant occasions like bridal ceremonies. These traditional caps are an important part of ceremonial attire, further emphasising the region’s cultural richness. Music and dance are integral to the celebrations in Nagar Valley. The trio band music is famous, and its rhythm compels people to engage in traditional dances. Popular dances include the Old Man Dance, Cow Boy Dance, and Sword Dance, which are performed during festivals and important events. When it comes to food, the cuisine of Nagar Valley is simple yet flavourful, focusing on light aromatic spices and minimal use of oil. Some of the most popular traditional dishes include Tikka Chilla, Mixed Vegetable Soup, Bakala Jo Soup, Date and Walnut Cake, Machi Bhat (a type of fish dish), Potato Curry, and Chicken Saak. Rice is a staple, and Yak’s milk holds special importance. The milk is used to make rich, high-fat butter, which is considered a precious gift, often exchanged between families as a sign of goodwill. This blend of culinary traditions, along with the region’s vibrant music and dance culture, makes Nagar Valley a place with a truly unique and rich heritage.
